Our story

Twenty years on Reading Lane

There has been a gym on Reading Lane for twenty years. We’ve run it for eighteen of them, which means most of what you’ll find here has been shaped slowly, by the people who actually use it.

Independent, and staying that way

We’re independent, and we have been for most of our history. That means every decision about this gym is made inside it: who we hire, what goes on the floor and what happens when something isn’t right. When you raise something with us, you’re talking to the people who can change it.

That might sound like a small thing. It’s the reason we can say yes to a member who needs a month off, keep a trainer who’s wonderful with beginners but allergic to sales targets, and include the sauna in every membership. No extras, no upgrades.

Who trains here

Twelve trainers, some of whom have been working side by side for more than a decade. Complete beginners. Lifters chasing numbers. Runners, new parents, shift workers and plenty of people who train as much for their heads as for their bodies.

There are more than thirty classes a week, from HIIT and Box to Pilates, Barre and Yoga, with thirty-minute Blast sessions for the days that don’t have an hour in them.

Your first month

Every new member starts with This Is Fit: three one-to-one sessions with a trainer who gets to know you, writes your programme and teaches you how to use it.

Nobody arrives knowing everything. Here, that’s the whole point of the first month.

What we’re not

We don’t compete on price, and we never have. What you’re paying for is the club: the coaching, the people and terms that say exactly what they mean, in plain English, before you sign anything.

We’re rated 4.4 on Google, across 559 reviews. Some of our members have been here longer than we have, which we’ve decided to take as a compliment.
